New Delhi: Delhi Police have detained a close associate of Rajesh Khimjibhai, the man accused of attacking chief minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing earlier this week.
The suspect, picked up in Rajkot, Gujarat, allegedly transferred money to Khimjibhai, officials said Friday. Investigators are also tracking at least ten others who were in touch with him via calls and online chats. One of the suspects is expected to be brought to Delhi by Friday evening, while statements of five others will be recorded by a police team stationed in Rajkot.
The assault took place on Wednesday morning at Gupta’s Civil Lines camp office. Her office described it as a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her.”
Khimjibhai, who has a history of violent crime and was previously booked in at least five cases including a knife attack, was arrested immediately after the incident. Police allege he had reached Delhi two days earlier, conducted reconnaissance near the CM’s residence and office, and was captured on CCTV cameras in the area.
He has been remanded in police custody for five days and is being interrogated at Civil Lines police station. An FIR has been filed under charges including attempt to murder, assault on a public servant, and obstruction.
In a statement on X, CM Gupta said the attack was “not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi.” She added she was recovering and vowed that “such attacks can never break my spirit or my commitment to serving the public.”
