MUMBAI: A 17-year-old junior college student, daughter of a real estate developer, died by suicide on Thursday after jumping from the 23rd floor of her family’s flat in a Goregaon East highrise.

Police said the teenager had been battling depression for two years and was undergoing treatment. She was scheduled to fly to London in 15 days to pursue higher studies, but did not leave behind a suicide note.

At the time of the incident, her mother was in the kitchen, her grandparents were in another room, and her father was away at work. “She jumped from the bedroom window. The incident was witnessed by the building receptionist. Her parents told us she had been under treatment for depression, which appears to be the reason for the extreme step,” said an Aarey police official.

An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been filed, and police are recording statements of her parents and doctor. Her parents told police they had recently visited the UK to finalise arrangements for her admission.

This tragedy comes weeks after a similar case in the same residential complex. On July 2, a 19-year-old student jumped from the 42nd floor after being denied entry into Mumbai airport for forgetting his travel permit before a Germany-bound flight. He had first abandoned his luggage at Juhu beach before returning to the building to end his life.

Police confirmed that this was the fourth suicide in the complex in the last eight months, three of which involved students.
