MUMBAI — Heavy overnight rains triggered a landslide in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area early Saturday, killing two people and injuring two others, officials said.
The incident occurred around 2:39 a.m. at Jankalyan Society in Varsha Nagar, when soil and rocks from a hillside collapsed onto a hut built on collector-owned land in a landslide-prone zone, according to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).
Rescue teams pulled four people from the debris and rushed them to Rajawadi Hospital. Shalu Mishra (19) and Suresh Mishra (50) were declared dead on arrival, while Aarti Mishra (45) and Ruturaj Mishra (20) are undergoing treatment in the trauma ward and are reported to be stable.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad district on Saturday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.
