The President’s Rule in Manipur has been prolonged for an additional six months, commencing on August 13, 2025, following a resolution proposed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

According to a statement from the Rajya Sabha parliamentary bulletin: “Amit Shah, Minister of Home Affairs; and Minister of Cooperation has submitted a notice regarding the following Resolution which has been accepted:- ‘This House endorses the continuation of the Proclamation dated February 13, 2025, concerning Manipur, issued under Article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for an extended period of six months effective from August 13, 2025.'”

The Presidential Rule was enacted in Manipur on February 13, shortly after N Biren Singh stepped down from his role as chief minister due to ethnic violence.

In accordance with Article 356(3) of the Constitution, President’s Rule, which is implemented through the Governor’s office, typically lasts for six months and can be renewed every six months with parliamentary approval for a maximum duration of three years.

The ethnic strife between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, which commenced on May 3, 2023, has led to 250 deaths and compelled over 60,000 people to flee their homes.

National Highways 2 and 37, crucial routes linking the isolated Imphal valley to Nagaland and Assam respectively, pass through areas populated by Kuki-Zo. Since May 2023, Meitei inhabitants of the valley have been unable to access these highways. Furthermore, more than 6,000 police firearms have been reported stolen in the State.
