NEW DELHI: A Delhi CBI court on Tuesday sentenced industrialist Manoj Kumar Jayaswal to three years of rigorous imprisonment for using forged documents to secure the Mahuagarhi coal block in Jharkhand for JAS Infrastructure and Capital Private Limited, where he was the managing director at the time.

Special Judge Sanjay Bansal also imposed a fine of ₹5 lakh on Jayaswal and ₹2 crore on the company. The case relates to alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks to private firms between 2006 and 2009.

Soon after the verdict, Jayaswal filed a plea seeking suspension of the sentence to allow him time to appeal before the Delhi High Court.

Taking the request into account, the court said: “In view of the submissions made, the sentence of imprisonment awarded to the convict shall remain suspended for 60 days, and he is admitted to bail upon furnishing a personal bond and a surety bond of ₹1 lakh each.”
