AGARTALA — A massive landslide in South Assam has disrupted train connectivity to Tripura, prompting the state government to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday morning to review the availability of essential commodities, including fuel.
The incident occurred on Monday evening between New Haflong and Jatinga Lampur, where falling boulders and a large section of landmass damaged railway tracks. The landslide was reportedly triggered by road repair work being carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Tripura government officials said they are in constant touch with the North East Frontier Railway (NFR).
“We were informed of the disruption last night and immediately contacted the Area Manager at Badarpur,” said a senior state official. “Restoration work is being carried out on a war footing.”
A high-level review meeting has been scheduled for later today to monitor the situation and take stock of supply chains, with a focus on preventing shortages of fuel and other essentials.
Meanwhile, the NFR has cancelled several key trains, including the Agartala–Bengaluru Express, citing continued debris and falling boulders near Jatinga Lampur. The Kanchanjungha Express, bound for Sealdah and originating from Sabroom in South Tripura, has also been suspended between Sabroom and Lumding.
So far, three trains originating from Agartala have been cancelled following the disruption.
As railway authorities work to clear debris and stabilize the affected section, the Tripura government is keeping a close watch to ensure supplies remain uninterrupted across the state.
