Kolkata – In a major push toward clean energy, Coal India Ltd (CIL) is set to supply 4,500 megawatts (MW) of renewable power to AM Green Ammonia (India), which is developing large-scale green ammonia production facilities.
This project is among the largest renewable energy agreements globally and marks a significant shift in Coal India’s role—from being a coal powerhouse to an active player in India’s green energy transition.
The power will be delivered in phases through a combination of solar and wind energy:
- Solar power: 2,500–3,000 MW
- Wind power: 1,500–2,000 MW
A non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this long-term green energy supply was signed between Coal India and AM Green on May 7.
The estimated project investment is around ₹25,000 crore, with:
- Wind projects likely to be set up in southern India
- Solar installations being considered for Gujarat or Rajasthan
AM Green will integrate these renewable sources with pumped hydro storage systems, enabling consistent and reliable power supply to its green ammonia facilities.
CIL Chairman P.M. Prasad said the move aligns with India’s goal of achieving a cleaner energy mix.
“While coal continues to play a vital role in meeting India’s growing energy demands, we are committed to contributing to a more sustainable future. This step supports our vision of becoming an integrated energy provider,” he added.
This partnership is a part of India’s broader push to decarbonize industrial sectors and achieve net-zero emissions, while simultaneously positioning the country as a leader in the green hydrogen and ammonia space.
