KYIV: Russia carried out a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine early Sunday, launching missiles, drones, and guided aerial bombs that killed five people and injured at least six others, Ukrainian officials said.
According to Ukraine’s air force, Moscow fired 53 ballistic and cruise missiles along with 496 drones in a coordinated strike that targeted civilian infrastructure across nine regions.
The western city of Lviv and its surrounding areas experienced the largest aerial assault since the war began in 2022, said Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the regional military administration.
In a Telegram post, Kozytskyi reported that Russian forces launched about 140 Shahed drones and 23 ballistic missiles toward the region. The barrage caused temporary blackouts in two Lviv districts, mayor Andriy Sadovyi confirmed, adding that power was restored within hours.
Ukrainian authorities said rescue and recovery efforts were continuing in affected areas, while air defence units intercepted a significant number of incoming targets overnight.
